Chronic kidney Disease (CKD) is the most prevalent form of kidney disease, with other conditions including acute kidney injury, kidney stones, infections, cysts, and cancer.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products and excess fluid from the body, as well as regulating blood pressure, haemoglobin levels, and electrolyte balance. Several conditions can harm the kidneys, and four of the most common kidney diseases are discussed in this blog.
When the kidney fails to effectively filter the blood, it indicates kidney damage.
There are two main types of kidney disease: acute and chronic, which vary based on symptoms and the individual’s condition.
Ayurvedic Management of Kidney Health
In Ayurveda, the kidneys are referred to as Vrikka and are made up of rakta (blood) and medha dhatu (fat tissue). Vrikka is considered the root of Medovaha Srotas (fat tissue channels). Any issues related to blood and fat can impact kidney function, such as the case with Prameha or Diabetes.
When the Kapha dosha blocks the Mutravaha Srotas (urinary system/ channels carrying the urine), it can lead to an increase in the vata dosha, causing improper urine production and tissue degeneration, ultimately leading to kidney malfunction and damage.
In Ayurveda, chronic kidney disease is referred to as “Jeerna or Pravruddha Vrikkadosha”. This condition shares similarities with descriptions found in Charak Samhita and typically includes persistent thirst, vomiting, hiccups, and pain.

What are the Symptoms of Kidney Problems?
Symptoms of kidney problems include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Pain, muscle twitches or cramps
- Changes in urination, and frothy urine
- Edema
- Puffiness and itching
- High blood pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Blood in the urine
Ayurveda utilizes safe and effective herbs to support kidney function and potentially avoid the need for dialysis. These herbs work to balance the doshas and strengthen the kidneys. It is important to seek treatment in the early stages of kidney issues, as it is more effective than waiting until later stages when dialysis or a kidney transplant may be necessary.
Damaged kidneys do not function properly, resulting in the retention of extra fluid and waste in the bloodstream rather than their elimination through urine. This build-up of toxic waste can adversely affect various organs, including the brain, heart, lungs, and bones.
In addition to chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, kidneys can also be damaged due to accidents or sports-related incidents.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) involves a gradual decline in kidney function, leading to the inadequate filtration of waste and excess fluid from the blood. Initially, there may be few or no symptoms, but as the condition progresses, noticeable changes may occur. Ayurvedic approach can slow the progression of kidney damage and address the underlying causes.
High blood pressure and diabetes are common causes of CKD. High blood pressure can exacerbate kidney damage over time, while diabetes, by increasing blood sugar levels, can lead to kidney failure, resulting in toxin overload in the body.
Kidney stones
Kidney stones form when minerals crystallize in the blood, potentially causing severe pain during urination.
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease involves the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys, hindering their function and potentially leading to kidney failure.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections, if left untreated, can also result in kidney damage or failure. Also Read: Ayurveda Home Remedies For UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections)
Kidney Failure
Acute Kidney Disease, or acute renal failure, is a sudden condition where the kidneys are unable to filter waste from the blood. This can develop rapidly and may be life-threatening. Symptoms include decreased urine output, shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and other serious complications.
Various factors, such as immune system disorders, the breakdown of tumour cells, urine blockages, and injuries from accidents or sports, can also lead to kidney disorders, either chronic or acute.
Ayurvedic therapy can effectively manage kidney diseases using herbal remedies. Herbs like punarnava, gokshura, and varuna are used to address the causes and symptoms of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by reducing swelling and eliminating excess fluid from the body. Also, Ayurveda can help manage kidney stones and other renal disorders with Ayurvedic medications and therapies, all without any side effects. This natural approach helps balance the doshas in the body using natural ingredients found in nature.
